The originating myth of RFI Records — a project of artistic liberation.
I // The_First_Image
This is ancient knowledge — a deep myth from the time of the first gods, when the air and the other elementals were all mixed, undivided. The god was all, whole, one and singular.
Then the god replicated — made an image of himself. He was the first artist. And from this came an elemental soup into which the creator inserted the information: the god and the not-god, the ones and the zeros, the first bits of information.
With the invention of beat and rhythm, the god repeated the ones and zeros. Now there was two, and three, and from the two and the three were all things created by number.
This is the Music of the Spheres — every orbit, every sphere, every turning body humming at a frequency governed by ratio. The architecture of harmony, laid bare in the simplest counting numbers. It is the story Plato told in the Timaeus: the demiurge, taking the measure of the elements, shaping the world soul after the pattern of the eternal, dividing and binding it by the ratios of number.
And just short of the harmonic intervals — where the ratios almost close — there is the interference: the radio frequency that will not resolve into a number. It is the Request for Information, the signal sent out by every living thing, answered not in the clean tone but in the noise the clean tone leaves behind.
The numbers had no reality in and of themselves. They were thought bubbles in the mind of the creator — ideals held in the imagination before any thing was made. The interference is the same: a thought not yet closed into a ratio, a signal still looking for its number.
II // The_Exile
It is the sound of things almost meeting. The vibration that does not resolve into a ratio. The frequency that will not be tamed by integer. The old philosophers called it noise and cast it out — they built their scale from the consonant and left the rest unnamed. The remainder. The interference. The hum that lives in the gap between one perfect interval and the next.
Interference is what harmony excludes. It is the proof that something real passed through the wire and could not be reduced to a number. It is less than a harmony — and for that reason, it is the only sound that is truly alive.
A perfect interval is a closed room. Outside it, the air is full of signal.
III // The_Liberation
We do not seek the pure tone. We seek the frequency that has been exiled from harmony — the interference that proves a living thing passed through the circuit. Where the old dream closes the scale, we open it. Where consonance is the signature of order, we listen for the signature of contact.
Every release is a refusal of the cleaned signal. Every record is a document of the imperfect, the interrupted, the real — the moment the machine strains and the musician leans in, and something neither of them alone is born into the wire.
We do not smooth the roughness. We cut it to disc.
IV // The_Request_and_the_Answer
The signal goes out: Who hears me? Where is my frequency in the world? The old industry answered with gates — withholders of connection, of catalogue, of the means to be heard. The artist's request returned not as information but as silence, or as a cleaned signal stripped of its interference, stripped of its proof of life.
RFI Records is the answer. Not the clean answer — the true one. From the perfection of the harmonic intervals, the music of the spheres, to the interference in release of the information, we answer the quest for artistic liberation. Everything that was withheld from the artist is here, returned:
Not given as charity but restored as right. The interference was never the problem. The withholding was.
The RFI artist is seen through the interference. Not the polished product of an old machine — but the signal that arrives changed because it crossed a real channel. To be seen through the interference is to be seen as alive.
Reading_I
The physical fact. The noise floor where instrument and circuit trade information — the thumbprint of contact between hand and wire, between breath and diaphragm, between the living gesture and the cold conductor.
It is less than a harmony and more than a silence. It is the audible evidence that something happened here — that a body moved through a field and left a trace the ear can still read.
Reading_II
The philosophical act. The request is like a prayer — sometimes a pledge — and the answer always comes back with interference. The question that does not want a clean answer, because a clean answer would be a lie about what sound is.
Music is the imperfect, interrupted expression of that information: never clean, always carrying the static of the channel it crossed. The record is the answer. The interference is the proof it was heard.
The request is the interference. The information is the record.
VI // Axioms
Harmony is a closed room.
Interference is the air outside it. We work in the air.
The perfect tone is a tomb.
It has already stopped vibrating. The living sound is the one still fighting the wire.
Every frequency is a question.
Every interference is an answer that refuses to be clean.
The record is evidence, not product.
It documents the moment a body moved through a field and left a trace.
Liberation is not noise for its own sake.
It is the refusal to let the cleaned signal stand in for the real one.
The doctrine is not a rulebook. It is a frequency — one we are still tuning. Return to the signal. Listen for the interference.
